Tea and pottery are a traditional combination in many cultures. This relationship between the arts and agriculture will be celebrated with the Community Cup: Tea &Pottery fundraiser to support Volcano Art Center studio art programs from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

This relationship between the arts and agriculture will be celebrated with the Community Cup: Tea &Pottery fundraiser to support Volcano Art Center studio art programs from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
The admission price of $25 in advance (or $30 at the door), includes a choice of one teacup or bowl, hand crafted by local Volcano potters, and samples of freshly brewed Hawaii-grown teas. Delicious cookies and sweets also will be available for purchase.
Throughout the afternoon, attendees will get to enjoy focused tea tastings, demonstrations and talks featuring local tea growers. Poetic tea stories will be told and there will be multiple tea and pottery cultural activities. Members of the Urasenke Hilo Association will demonstrate a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Additional exhibits will highlight domestic tea production from the TOTUS (Tea of the United States) Awards, a national competition hosted in 2015 by the Volcano Art Center.
In the ceramics and glass classrooms, VAC instructors and students will answer questions as they work on projects including wheel-thrown pottery, flame-working glass and stained glass.
